In 1960 THR began to build a number of diesel locomotives. Based on Sentinel steam locomotive chassis dimensions they were powered by Rolls-Royce engines and called Vanguards. The agreement with F.C Hibberd expired at the end of March 1960 and was not renewed.

Thomas Hill rebuilt nearly a dozen Fowler 0-4-0 diesel mechanical locos as 0-4-0DH, retaining the frame, running gear and some of the bodywork, fitting new engine and transmission and engine cover. These locos also were allocated works numbers with a 'c' suffix. Thomas Hill also built Vanguards, Titans, and Steelmans amongst others.

Thomas Hill (Rotherham) started as agents for the Sentinel steam loco range, and after Sentinel were bought by Rolls-Royce, were instrumental in bringing about the Sentinel diesel loco. In 1960 they built their own works at Kilnhurst, and created the Vanguard loco marque, filling gaps that the Sentinel standard machines couldn't fulfill.

Sep 12, 2012 · I've already found this photo, definitely a TH Vanguard and it looks very much like Liverpool docks. It could have been a TH demonstrator, the one in Southport shed looks very similar but there were lots of these in several variations - including some rebuilt from steam locos.

GB Railfreight operated a pair of refurbished Vanguard 0-6-0DH locos (re-numbered DH50-1 and DH50-2) for shunting purposes at Tremorfa/Cardiff Tidal works. Hartlepool Steelworks initially dieselised with a fleet of John Fowler locos, a mix of 0-6-0DH 424 class and 0-4-0DM 422 class models. The latter were supplemented by three Thomas Hill Vanguard locos in 1971, this is the third one TH233v
