In 1960 THR began to build a number of diesel locomotives. Based on Sentinel steam locomotive chassis dimensions they were powered by Rolls-Royce engines and called Vanguards. The agreement with F.C Hibberd expired at the end of March 1960 and was not renewed.

Thomas Hill rebuilt nearly a dozen Fowler 0-4-0 diesel mechanical locos as 0-4-0DH, retaining the frame, running gear and some of the bodywork, fitting new engine and transmission and engine cover. These locos also were allocated works numbers with a 'c' suffix. Thomas Hill also built Vanguards, Titans, and Steelmans amongst others.

Sep 12, 2012 · I've already found this photo, definitely a TH Vanguard and it looks very much like Liverpool docks. It could have been a TH demonstrator, the one in Southport shed looks very similar but there were lots of these in several variations - including some rebuilt from steam locos.
