Mtgo vanguard was amazing, but they never supported it with bans, so certain decks became too powerful and everyone lost interest. One annoying one I remember was a vanguard that made all spells one black cheaper so people ran 1 mana black creatures and [[glimpse of nature]] and dropped half their deck first turn.

Planechase fixed a lot of the problems Vanguard had. Probably had a bigger impact on Magic than people think - you can see a lot of the ideas of EDH and Planewalker cards in Vanguard. (And there was the cool Momir Vig format on MTGO that was implemented using the hacky Vanguard system).
