Glenbuchat takes a Z-plan form, comprising a main block with square wings projecting from the north-east and south-west. The castle is unusual in the region for this emphasis on horizontal rather than vertical mass, giving it the appearance of a fortified house rather than tower house.

The monument to be scheduled comprises the remains of Glenbuchat Castle and a surrounding area of land representing part of the policies. The castle is a fine example of a Z-plan tower-house, with square towers, or jambs, placed at diagonally opposing corners of a central rectangular block.

Situated immediately to the south west of the well preserved 1590 Glenbuchat Castle (see separate listing), much of the finely constructed wall of this garden pre-dates the building of Castle Lodge (originally known as Glenbuchat Cottage) in 1826.
