I need advice being that I am new to classic Mustangs. I have a chance to trade for a 1965(later year model) Mustang Convertible. Serial # 5F08T723729. I have deciphered the VIN# and know it was 1965, made in the Dearborn plant, a luxury convertible with a 200 CID 1V 6 cylinder engine.

I purchased a 1965 Mustang, 289 V8 automatic w/ps & pb. New paint job w/4-5 chips, new wheels, 290K on motor (however not sure right now if orginal motor) I don't have possession of it but paid TOP dollar for it on a USED car lot. 12.5K to be exact.

Actually, American Motors was not the only American automaker guilty of keeping their level of technology as low as possible....I recall that Chrysler used flathead engines into the 1960s, and really, a 1965 Ford Mustang was not much different at all from a 1935 Buick once you removed the attractive body.

The LTD was retired after 1986, made obsolete by the Taurus, which revolutionized the American family car. Still, the Fox platform wasn't finished. The T-bird/Cougar coupes rode it through 1988, while the Mark VII was around until around 1992. Even today, the Ford Mustang is still riding a heavily revised version of the Fairmont chassis!

In fact there's a Car and Driver test from March 1965 that has a 2+2 doing the quarter in 13.8 seconds at 106 mph and 0-60 in 3.9 seconds--weighing 4155 pounds and with a 3.42 axle. That 106 mph trap speed means serious horsepressure.

It’s no wonder why people don’t want to buy American cars anymore! This was the worst experience ever, buying my first new car wasn't supposed to go like this.
