A memorial was held at the Arnot Mall to honor President Jimmy Carter’s service with Habitat for Humanity. The event included affiliates from The Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben County Habitat organizations.

Carter and his wife Rosalynn were advocates for affordable housing. According to Habitat for Humanity, they helped build, renovate, or repair more than 4,447 homes in 14 countries. “Former president Jimmy Carter, he really wanted to see families in affordable housing,” Skipper said.

The former president dedicated decades to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, helping build an estimated 4,400 homes alongside 160,000 volunteers.

President Jimmy Carter will be honored in a state funeral Thursday, culminating days of marking the contributions of a man who after leaving office remained an influential leader on the world stage.
