MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The "Gulf of Mexico" name is internationally recognized, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's comments about renaming the body of water. Trump on Tuesday had argued in favor of renaming the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."

"We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring," Trump said. "The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name, and it's appropriate" Trump said.

The president-elect told reporters Tuesday that he wanted the body of water called the Gulf of America, but he provided no details on how the change would be enacted.

President-elect Donald Trump said renaming the gulf is "appropriate," blasting Mexico for the migrants crossing the southern border.
