Holding signs saying 'gringo go home' and 'no tourists,' Mexico City residents took to the streets to complain about what they say is the gentrification of their city.

A protest by hundreds against gentrification and mass tourism that began peacefully Friday in Mexico City neighborhoods popular with tourists turned violent when a small number of people began smashing storefronts and harassing foreigners.

The frustrations that led to the protest were built from years of mass tourism and rent prices rising in large swathes of the city.
