Decentralized social network Mastodon has announced plans to transfer its ownership to a new nonprofit entity. Ownership of Mastodon will move away from the control of CEO Eugen Rochko, in contrast to the power exerted by other social media CEOs like Meta cofounder Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk.

Eugen Rochko, CEO of the decentralized social networking platform Mastodon, is handing over control to a nonprofit organization. In other words, Rochko is voluntarily handing over the reins of the platform to a nonprofit entity.

Mastodon is now shifting to a nonprofit model, stepping away from its founder Eugen Rochko’s sole control, and embracing its original vision of decentralization. The platform, founded in 2016, was built to give users more control over their social experience,
