A video released as part of an ongoing lawsuit against Southern California Edison, the electrical utility for Los Angeles, appears to show what a law firm says is the start of the deadly Eaton Fire.

Palisades Fire initially started 10:30 a.m. Jan. 7 in Los Angeles County. It has burned 23,448 acres after being active for 22 days. A crew of 800 firefighters has been working on site and they managed to contain 97% of the fire by Wednesday evening. The blaze's cause remains under investigation.

The Jan. 25 death is the 12th fatality connected to the Palisades Fire, while another 17 are attributed to the Eaton Fire, officials said

The number of deaths from the wildfires that destroyed entire communities in the Los Angeles area in January 2025 has risen to 29, the county medical examiner’s office said.

Climate change was a major factor behind the hot, dry weather that gave rise to the devastating LA fires, a scientific study has confirmed. It made those weather conditions about 35% more likely, according to World Weather Attribution - globally recognised for their studies linking extreme weather to climate change.

Extreme conditions helped drive the fast-moving fires that destroyed thousands of homes in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena.

Although pieces of the analysis include degrees of uncertainty, researchers said trends show climate change increased the likelihood of the fires.
