It didn't take long for the New England Patriots to make their first major move of the offseason. Shortly after Sunday's season finale vs. the Buffalo Bills, Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced the team parted ways with first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.
The New York Giants won't have the No. 1 pick, but got some help from the New England Patriots in Week 18. If things went as well for the New York Giants all year as they did on Sunday, they’d be having much different conversations than what’s awaiting for them after Week 18.
A surprising Giants win completely shakes up the race for the No. 1 pick, putting New England in the driver's seat and sowing chaos.
Four of New England’s 2025 opponents (Baltimore, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay) advanced to the postseason this year.
New York holds the third pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and could have a quarterback at the top of its wish list. The Giants signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension in 2023. The quarterback played in 16 games over the past two seasons before the New York released him on Nov. 27.
Since Super Bowl XLVI, when the Giants defeated the Patriots the second time, Big Blue has gone 79-132, a .374 win percentage, in the regular season. They’ve made the playoffs twice, winning just one game in 2022 under Daboll, the team’s fifth head coach since Tom Coughlin walked away after the 2015 season.
After the (unfortunate?) Giants win, the New England Patriots officially became the team with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, barring a Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills. Notable Patriots fan Bill Simmons took to Twitter to show his appreciation for their rivals:
Here's the draft order for the non-playoff teams, per Tankathon:
Buffalo 's 23-16 loss to New England on Sunday cost the Patriots the No. 1 pick in April's NFL Draft. New England came into the game tied with Tennessee and Cleveland for the worst record in the NFL. Cleveland lost 35-10 on Saturday to Baltimore and Tennessee dropped a 23-14 decision to Houston on Sunday.
The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders have added a four-time Super Bowl champion to their list of potential head coach candidates.
The Bears will meet virtually with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Saturday for their head coach job.
