What they did not have was a final decision. Any one of the three could have taken MOTD and run with it, put their stamp on it. But now none of them can do that.

The BBC has confirmed who will replace Gary Lineker on Match of the Day. It was confirmed back in November that the former footballer, who has hosted the BBC football highlights show since 1999, will exit his long-running role at the end of the season.

Gary Lineker, the current host of the flagship show, is due to step down at the end of the season, having previously said it was the "right time" to go.
