By Yuliya Talmazan Israel carried out what it said was a “targeted strike” on the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday after Hezbollah unleashed an intense barrage of fire across the border following a wave of stunning attacks targeting the group’s communication devices.

An Israeli official confirmed that the Israeli military targeted Ibrahim Akil, a senior Hezbollah military official, in Friday’s airstrike on Beirut. It wasn’t immediately clear if Akil was killed in the Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs that killed at least three people and wounded 17

Here are the unanswered questions. Some early speculation suggested that the pagers could have been targeted by a complex hack that caused them to explode. But that theory was quickly dismissed by experts.

Explosions continued Wednesday in Lebanon, killing at least 20 people. The Lebanese government and Hezbollah blame Israel for the apparently coordinated attack. Israel’s defense minister said they are “at the start of a new phase in the war.
