FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Factory shutdowns would be a wrong move by Volkswagen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, adding that Europe's largest carmaker had a responsibility to its employees.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, facing declining poll numbers ahead of a snap election, has publicly urged Volkswagen to avoid factory closures, adding political pressure to an already volatile situation.

Scholz acknowledged that it was up to the company and its staff representatives to discuss the matter. The negotiations were accompanied on Monday by warning strikes at nine Volkswagen locations.
