Several Montreal-area school boards and institutions have announced closures as the biggest winter storm of the season cloaks the city in snow. Hundreds of flights out of Montreal have also been cancelled.

Roads across the region are snow covered and slippery, with reduced visibility. All schools in the Montréal region, including those off-island, as well as CEGEPS and Universities, are closed today.

A major winter storm disrupted travel plans, closed schools and shuttered city services across Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces Thursday, as communities dug out from a wintry cocktail that brought upwards of 20 centimetres of snow.

With Montreal still digging its way out from Thursday's massive snowstorm — the biggest of the season so far — we're already bracing for another round of fresh snow this weekend. It's almost as if winter heard we were getting comfortable and decided to keep things interesting.

A major winter storm is expected to hit Montreal and the surrounding areas late Wednesday night, with up to 40 centimetres of snow expected by Thursday evening, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
