The lake that I was fishing on that July morning contains lots of northern pike as well as the pike's bigger cousin, muskies. I have no doubt that a pike eats an occasional loon chick.

In 1994, northern pike were illegally introduced into the lake, most likely by anglers who enjoyed fishing for them in the Midwest and Great Lakes, where they are native, according to officials.
