WASHINGTON ― Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill” went down in a big, ugly flop as conservatives voted against the measure in the House Budget Committee on Friday. The bill would cut food and health care programs by $1 trillion to help pay for nearly $5 trillion in tax cuts representing President Donald Trump’s chief domestic policy goal of his second term.

Republican fiscal hawks joined Democrats to sink the bill, which includes tax provisions approved by the House Ways and Means Committee earlier this week, due to concerns about its cost and the impact on federal deficits.
