When they arrived, heavy smoke and fire were consuming a building, where two apartments were located, and the fire was coming from the front apartment of the two. Spencer County Fire Department and Nelson County Fire Department were called to assist as the fire spread to the second apartment and an adjacent warehouse part of the distillery.

The department said a Mayday was issued when a complete roof collapse trapped three Northeast Nelson firefighters and two Nelson County firefighters.
