As part of President Trump's immigration crackdown, his administration is suing Chicago and Illinois over what are known as sanctuary laws.

The lawsuit accuses city, county, and state authorities of ‘minimally enforcing—and oftentimes affirmatively thwarting’ federal immigration law.

The federal lawsuit is the first by Trump's Department of Justice against states or municipalities that have sanctuary city policies in effect.
